Italy was represented by Nicola di Bari, with the song '"I giorni dell'arcobaleno", at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 25 March in Edinburgh. For the first time since 1966, broadcaster RAI chose the winning song and performer from the year's Sanremo Music Festival as their entry. == At Eurovision == On the night of the contest di Bari performed 12th in the running order, following Austria and preceding Yugoslavia. "I giorni dell'arcobaleno" was a very subtle, delicate song with none of the extravagant drama characteristic of many previous Italian entries, and di Bari gave an appropriately understated performance with no vocal dramatics, flamboyant gesticulation or anguished facial expressions. At the close of voting "I giorni dell'arcobaleno" had received 92 points, placing Italy 6th of the 18 entries.〔(ESC History - Italy 1972 )〕 "I giorni dell'arcobaleno" has a high reputation, with its timeless and undating appeal being widely praised. It is often used as an example of a song which takes several listens to appreciate, therefore was never likely to challenge for victory in the 'instant' milieu of Eurovision.
